Mathematics is often regarded as one of the hardest subjects studied at school. It’s been well reported that up to 40% of students perform below grade level in high school. Let’s examine some of the common reasons why so many students find Maths challenging:
1. Poor Foundation
Maths knowledge is accumulated over many years. We teach our children to count as soon as they can talk, and from this, students develop their Mathematics knowledge over many years. A student who has gaps in their understanding of the foundational pillars of Maths will struggle to comprehend more challenging topics. It is vital that any gaps are addressed, reinforcing basic Mathematical skills, helping to bridge the gap.
2. Fear of Failure

As an educator with over 20 years experience, I have seen so many students be intimidated by Mathematics – fear of failure only makes this worse! Anxiety over mistakes, not understanding topics, or poor examination results compounds the issue, leading to a reluctance to engage. It is vital to encourage a growth mindset in student – so vital I wrote a blog post on it!
3. Poor study habits
We all know the saying “practice makes perfect”. Well, mastery of Mathematics requires consistent and effective practice and repetition. Some students lack the necessary study habits to do this, struggling to manage their time effectively. As at tutor, I focus on both the Mathematics problems and effective study strategies.
4. Lack of Engagement
Traditional “chalk and talk” teaching methods simply do not to every students learning needs and interests. A lack of engagement in the classroom can result in disinterest and detachment from Mathematics. I therefore incorporate interactive activities and modern technology into my lessons. Incorporating technology fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation for Mathematics.
5. Negative Mindset
“When will we need this”. The classic line loathed by Maths teachers everywhere! It signifies many student’s opinion that they will never use the skills we teach outside the classroom, which couldn’t be further from the truth! Students fail to see the beauty of mathematics, and develop a negative attitude, whether influenced by personal experiences, societal stereotypes, or peer pressure.
As educators, we must understand and address these common challenges and reasons why students struggle with Maths. Find out how I can help you in maths – simply reach out today!
