"Why I Teach: Exploring the Joys and Rewards of Being an Educator"

Reflecting on my journey as an educator and teacher for the last 15 years, I cannot help but ask myself:

What drove me to be an educator?  Why am I still a teacher?

My Teaching Journey

I started tutoring a family friend at the age of 15 in Mathematics and Chemistry. Finding real enjoyment and value in helping others, I set up a tutoring club at high school, where we helped support younger students. After graduating, I decided I needed to broaden my horizons and teach in a different setting. I spent a year living in Australia, teaching rowing to middle and high school students.

Moving forward, I studied Mathematical Physics at Durham University and volunteered as a tutor for underprivileged children. It was here that I decided I wanted to pursue my love of helping others as a career – so I started my teaching training at Cambridge University. I graduated with a Masters in Mathematics Education, with a dissertation that focused on how grouping students by their ability negatively impacts the lowest achieving.

Fast forward to today. I’ve been working as a teacher and tutor of Mathematics both in the UK and internationally for 8 years. I’ve been an IB examiner, pastoral leader, youth counsellor, Mathematics department chair and also responsible for running overseas international trips and student mentoring programs.

The Why

But none of the above fully answers why I teach. I have a family friend who has been a headteacher at a top private school for the last 20 years. When I asked them why they taught, their answer resonated with me:

“Children only get one chance at education. Every day you go to work with the knowledge that you can change someone’s life. You get that opportunity every single day.”

I love the fact that my job matters. I believe that being part of educating the next generation today creates a better tomorrow for everyone.

Everyone remembers their favourite teachers. For me, it was my Mathematics teacher, Ms. Mundell. She was a big part of the reason why I chose Mathematics at university, and why I teach the subject today. Her teaching inspired my love of Mathematics by making it fun and relatable. I often reflect on this and wonder if she knows how much of an impact she had on my future.

This in turn makes me think of the immense privilege of being a teacher.

I believe in the power of teaching. I aim to inspire students, make a real impact on their lives and engage and motivate them. I live my life by one simple motto:

In a world where you can be anything. Be Kind.
